Three Brothers, an Idea, and the Aflac Duck

John, Paul, and Bill Amos were not insurance experts; they were three hard-working brothers who knew that Americans need financial protection when an illness or accident strikes.  With a commitment to be there for policyholders dealing with a medical situation, they created Aflac—now the largest insurance provider of individual insurance in Japan and the leading provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. 


1955 – Brothers John, Paul, and Bill founded American Family Life Insurance Company (later changed to American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus). John B. Amos served as the first chairman and president.

1958 – Aflac developed its ground-breaking cancer expense policy.

1964 – The company becomes American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus. 

1964 – Aflac pioneered the cluster-selling technique of making presentations to groups of employees.

1974 – Aflac became the third U.S. company licensed to sell insurance in Japan, which now accounts for more than 75 percent of Aflac's annual revenue.

1974 – American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus was listed on the NY stock exchange (AFL opens at $7.25).

1989 – American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus adopted the acronym Aflac.

1990 – Daniel P. Amos became CEO of Aflac Incorporated and Paul S. Amos became chairman.

1991 – Aflac launched its first national advertising campaign in the United States designed to increase the company's name recognition and lays the foundation for a decade of strong growth.

1994 – Aflac U.S. and Aflac Japan associates, and our employees came together to donate  $2 million to the American Red Cross to establish Corporate America's Helping Hands Fund for relief from the Kobe, Japan, earthquake.

1995 – Aflac focused its national philanthropic efforts on the treatment and cure of childhood cancer and pledged $3 million to establish the Aflac Cancer Center at Egleston Children's Hospital.

1996 – Aflac invents new electronic technology called SmartApp®. In 1999, SmartApp® received the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for Excellence in Technology.

1998 – Aflac was recognized by Fortune magazine on its list of 100 Best Companies to Work For and has continued to earn that distinction for the past 14 years. 

1999 – Aflac Japan joined with the Children's Cancer Association of Japan to build the Aflac Parents House.

2000 – The Aflac Duck’s first commercial, “Park Bench,” aired. 

2001 – Japanese insurance giant Dai-ichi Mutual Life Insurance Company and Aflac Japan formed a business alliance.  

2003 – Aflac Japan became the industry leader in Japan.

2003 – In Japan, the Aflac Duck was introduced.

2004 – The second Aflac Japan Parents House is completed.

2005 – Aflac changed its logo to include the Aflac Duck.

2007 – Aflac is the first company to offer its shareholders a nonbinding Say on Executive Pay. 

2007– Aflac is recognized by Ethisphere magazine on its inaugural list of the World's Most Ethical Companies and has retained its place on the list every year since.  

2009 – Aflac completed its acquisition of Continental American Insurance Company, which is currently branded Aflac Group.

2012 – Aflac appeared on Fortune magazine’s list of The World’s Most Admired Companies for the 11th time.
